For from his fullness we have all received, grace upon grace. For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. – John 1:16,17 ESV

There are probably few words tossed about in the church world more loosely than “grace.” Every denomination of most every stripe sings about it, preaches about it, and claims to believe it. Of course, a word must be properly defined in order to understand the intent of those who employ it. Sadly, and ironically, the devil is in the details!

In Scripture, grace is a term used to describe the unmerited favor of God in the person and work of Jesus Christ for His people. Scripture always refers to grace in the context of what Christ completed, His sinless death burial, and resurrection for the sins of His people.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
Ephesians 2:8,9 ESV

God saves His people in Christ by grace through His gift of faith. Notice all of the work is completed in Christ and NOT by those who are being saved. Why? Because salvation is a gift of God’s grace! In fact, there is no room to boast about ANYTHING we do when it comes to salvation. We are, by grace, God’s workmanship in Christ! Praise God, the work of redemption is all of grace!

And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.1 Peter 5:8 ESV

Redeemer Church believes and teaches the Free and Sovereign Grace of God. God saves apart from ALL human works and effort. Because we understand grace to be the wondrous work of God that it is, we rest entirely on God’s promise to keep His people in perfect peace, to faithfully complete the work He began in us, and to present us faultless before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy! And how will God do all of this? He will perform it by His grace in the work of Christ alone!

Amazing Grace! How sweet the sound! – JB
